As you may know by now, all the CrossFit equipment has been moved to the new space. Sorry, no more oggling of the hot CrossFit ladies. Zvi removed half of the pull up bars and put in a couple extra rows of mats to the Jiu-Jitsu section. Thanks Zvi! I'll try and take a better picture and post it next time but this should give you an idea:

Gracie Mag quotes of the day:
"Study is a lifelong pursuit" -Rickson Gracie
"If you can't disguise what you're feeling during a match, your adversary will use it against you." -Fabio Gurgel
"It's important not to let yourself get caught up in the adrenaline and stress of a championship. That's what most hinders an athlete, much more than being out of practice or having slept poorly." -Saulo Ribeiro
"Folks tend to pick who they train with. Champions do the opposite. They seek out tough training partners, go for the challenge, the dispute. The power of the will is greater than fear or vanity." - Carlos Gracie Jr.
"Having a surprise move is always nice. With it you have greater chances of winning the chess game that is a Jiu-Jitsu match. Work on luring the adversary into your trap and pounce." -Braulio Estima

Pan Ams are exactly a month away. For those that don't have GracieMag, a new quote from "35 tips on how to become a champion" will be posted everyday til Pan Ams. BOA~!

Very nice Fook!
Posted by: Marco | March 08, 2010 at 15:48
Well I have the days off. As for being healthy I'm working on it. We should get some plans together soon.

3/9: "Sometimes only wanting to finish isn't the best strategy. Jiu-Jitsu's purtiy can be maintained with a more low-key game, a game based on reaching a position, advancing and winning. That you learn with tournament experience; you start to value progression, wait for the right time to attack and defend. Just attacking is something that only works up until brown belt, but at black belt it's not like that" -Xande Ribeiro
Yeh anyone got deals on hotels? I'd say we should get a spot between The Bren Center and Newport Beach. Probably near highway 55.
Posted by: f00k | March 09, 2010 at 07:44
Nice Fook.
I'll keep a look out on the hotels. Somewhere close to the venue would be good. Are we thinking carpool? Maybe rent a van or something?
Posted by: Meaty | March 09, 2010 at 11:00
Wednesday after training we should get a bite to eat and talk about the tourney trip or just hang out and talk jiu jitsu. There is never to much jiu jitsu talk.

Kebabs or Chili's?

3/10: "The ones to lose generally complain how they would have been able to meet their objectives had they enough time to train. So I remind them that it doesn't matter how much time you have, since you have just as much time as other people who are much more successful than you are. What matters is how you manage your time. It's not a question of not having enough time, but of having control over your time." -Martin Rooney
Posted by: f00k | March 10, 2010 at 09:06
Jimmy you going now?
Before arranging anything, I think we should get a list of people that are going for SURE! I'm sure a few 'maybes' will drop out last minute, so whoever knows they are going for sure, let us know so we can arrange seats for the ride down and hotel rooms.
Posted by: f00k | March 10, 2010 at 09:09
Nope.

3/11: "Training for championships has to bring about constant evolution, both physically and technically. Seek to make your body work at it's limit. When you feel well trained, you'll be a more confident competitor." -Braulio Estima
Posted by: f00k | March 11, 2010 at 07:44
We need to break in those new mats with a team royal rumble!
BTW: For those interested in doing the JJ Camp in SD this summer, I hit up JJ University and they said it would be $100 per week, but if we wanted to do 2 weeks, they would give us the second week for free. So pretty much $100 for 2 weeks of training at JJ University, San Diego! Lemme know what yal think
Posted by: f00k | March 11, 2010 at 12:55
First of all, I think it's the crossfit girls that are always eyeballing the Jiu Jitsu hotness, not the other way around.
Second, a bus or RV for cool for pan ams. Some friends and I did that for Mardi Gras back in the day and drove from VA to Nola and it was a blast.
Lastly - Count me IN for San Diego for sure. Ive got 8 weeks of vaca this year and I wanna spend it training! We should do an RV or bus for that too.

More exciting than having more mat space? Being able to hear Maestre pass on the knowledge!

Just found out Mestre is teaching at AKA Sunnyvale M-F 10-11:30am. Looks like I found my new lunch spot!!!

3/12: "The art of recognizing momentary defeat is vital in keeping you healthy throughout your apprenticeship and, therefore, in achieving conquests down the road." -Saulo Ribeiro
3/13: "Be aware of how the mind is the controlling factor for everything that happens. A lot of guys who are good in the academy are lackluster at championships. When competing, putting it all on the line under pressure, you have to be able to perform what you know." -Rickson Gracie
3/14: "Learn to start all over again. In a fight, you can lose everything in a fraction of a second or because of a silly detail. It's not the end of the world. If today you lose, tomorrow you'll be back in the academy, training again." -Marcio Feitosa

I'm dig'n all the quotes Fook. You can see the trend in these quotes of how much mental and emotional content in training is needed. It tends to be overlooked sometimes with only focusing on crazy moves and techniques. Composure...

"The gym is the anvil on which fighters are forged, tempered like a samurai sword with thousands of hammer blows, bending steel into steel. Fighters are born in the dedication to repetition. Its not about who is stronger and faster, although those things can cover for other problems. Nothing can replace natural self-discipline, nothing can replace time in the gym...you have to love the journey."

3/16: "A champion isn't just produced by a championship. Compete frequently, and that way you will sharpen up your instinct and gain experience to change tactics while under pressure. Not to mention the fact you face competitors you've never seen before. In other words, take on new moves and less conventional games. Thus you learn not to be surprised." -Rodrigo Minotauro

^^ Same concept as our basic arm bar except its from a high mount so you pivot of the choke instead of the chest. He didn't get his hips all the way around but was able to adjust because he had good wrist control.
Posted by: MikePru | March 17, 2010 at 13:14
i just thought it was crazy how he didn't use the leg over the head at first.. yeh like you said it wouldn't have worked if he didn't have good wrist control... i didn't think that was a good defense anyways lol

Thanks for the vid fook. Dude, I qualify for the senior division... they go by birth YEAR. I'll probably stick with masters though... or maybe I should sign up for both? :)

Here is what I know so far in regards to Pan Ams:
Fookie will be driving down on Thursday 04/08
Kyle and Allison may be riding down with him
Tom and Tiffany will be driving down on Friday 04/09
I have ONE hotel room reserved from 04/08-04/11 here: http://www.hiecostamesa.com/
It's about 5.5 miles from the venue and 3.5 miles from the beach.
I'm registered 141 lbs, masters... I also regisetered for the open weight... because it was free to do so.
Who else is going? It looks like we still need to work out a lot of the logistics.

Posted by: Tom Gaughan | March 19, 2010 at 11:28

The Gracie Mag newletter sends out this headline:
"The 15 Most Classic Pan Moments."
I didnt see anything about:
Will putting some dude to sleep before he even realized he was going nappy nap.
Meaty overcoming a painfully illegal bicep slicer to compete in the next round
Tom providing the only 2 submissions in his bracket.
Kyle sending 4 dudes packing, dreams crushed.
Mike Prudencio coaching every single match.
Got any more Pan Moments? Where will you be this year?!?

We are proud to announce the 1st annual Kaijin Dodgeball Invitational. The tournament will take place on Sunday, April 18th starting at 12:30pm with a rules meeting, with games to start at 1.
The event will be a double elimination tournament with subsequent challenge matches. We will be playing 5 on 5 so start looking for your team of 5 to sign up as soon as possible (we may have to limit the number of teams if it gets too big). The cost for the event will be a minimum donation of $20 for each team with all proceeds going to the Santa Cruz SPCA (who hopefully will bring a few dogs for a small mobile pet adoption). Kaijin members can form as many teams as it takes to include everyone, however, other invited schools and institutions may enter only one team of 5 (with 2-3 alternates). Team costumes encouraged.
The winning team will get a sweet trophy and unlimited prestige.
Let the games begin…
If anyone at One World is interested let me know.
-Mike
